What Is the VRT in Malta?

The Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (VRT) is a mandatory inspection to ensure vehicles on Maltese roads meet national safety and environmental standards.

A valid VRT certificate is legally required to renew your road licence.

While insurance can be paid without a valid VRT, the road licence cannot be issued without it. Fines are linked to licence compliance, not directly to the VRT itself.

    When Is VRT Required?

In Malta, VRT is generally required as follows:

    • 4 years after first registration (or 5 years, depending on the vehicle’s number plate and registration date).
    • After 2 years for certain new commercial vehicles (this does not apply to imported Japan/UK vehicles).
    • Every 2 years thereafter.
    • Annually for vehicles with over 160,000 km (100,000 miles).
    • Annually, for vehicles that exceed the mileage threshold, regardless of age.VRT can be carried out up to 90 days before the expiry of your road licence.

Yes. A valid VRT certificate is legally required for road use and road licence renewal.

Can I drive without a valid VRT?

No. Driving without a valid VRT certificate may result in fines, penalties, and potential insurance complications.

Insurance can still be paid without a valid VRT. However, the road licence cannot be renewed without a valid VRT certificate. Any fines are related to an expired road licence, not directly to the VRT itself.
